Part 105 ~

Sylva shrank back, her stomach roiling with nausea, her thoughts going off like firecrackers. Zeke caught her, keeping her embraced close to his body. “Sylva, darlin’, it’s okay. I’ll get this straightened out. Soon.” Not knowing what to believe, she stared at him like a dumbstruck fool. “Can I help out, cousin?” The man’s sexy voice rolled over her back and into her ears, a river of smooth-blended whiskey. “Other than lassoing Merlinda,” he qualified. “She’s not my ridin’ type. Ah, pardon me, Bride of my cousin, I didn’t mean to offend you.” Zeke eased her around. “My cousin, Royce.”

Zeke hoped Royce was a godsend. He needed one like parched land needed rainshowers. “Zeke, I’m calling you out,” Merlinda coldly shouted. “Turn around and face me, or I’m calling you a peacock coward.” Stroking his bride’s shoulders, Zeke squeezed reassuringly. “Royce will escort you in my absence. I won’t be long.” Royce smiled in as gentlemanly a manner as he could, never his courting forte, then extended his forearm like he was inside a honky tonk bar. Hesitantly his Sylva reached out, accepting Royce’s arm. “What is a peacock coward?” she asked. “The fancified duds your husband is wearing.”
