Chapter One ~ Her Hired Hand

“Oh.”

Her voluptuous dark pink lips formed an O. Trail caught himself wondering if she would respond to him like Maureen O’Hara had to John Wayne when he’d hauled her over his lap and given her ass a good blistering. Or when he’d seized her against him and forced a kiss on her fighting lips.

Stop, he warned himself. Stop thinking like that.

Chapter Two ~ Why a Shoebox?

“They’re gone,” she whispered, despair in every line of her body. Twisting out of his grip, she moved to a side window. “Now I wish we’d never found them. It’s not worth what ” She pivoted back to him. “You know, what just happened to us, to Luke and Spook. It’s not worth it. Now that they’ve been stolen, I guess I don’t have to worry about being attacked again.”

“There may be more than one group after them,” he cautioned. “Why a shoebox?”

Chapter Three ~ Fire Devouring Stallion

Trail hit the steering wheel with the heel of his hand, hard. Frustration owned him as the vision formed inside his mind. Minutes ago, a nasty firebombing had taken place. The towers of flame erupted before his mind’s eye.

Making a sharp right onto a back road, he smashed the pedal down, blasting the speedometer up to ninety in seconds.

The fire spread rapidly, and he’d been the stallion designated to handle it.

Chapter Four ~ Psi-viewing Together

Cautiously, he arrowed his awareness toward whoever spied on them, not knowing if they had their own psychic talent, a more common practice than most people realized. He found two men and a woman inside a cargo van parked near the end of a neighbor’s drive.

One of the men reached out with psi tendrils trying to grasp what teased the edge of his mind’s eye. To distract him while he investigated the setup, Trail tempted him with false images. Hearing Seneca’s footsteps, he felt inspiration slap him as if a mare hoofed his butt. “Do you want to see?” he quietly asked.

“See?” she whispered, approaching him. He felt her curiosity rise with the strength of the forest fire he’d defeated.

“I’ll show you what I’m viewing.”

“How?”

“I thought you only wanted it ‘vanilla’ style,” she icily whispered.
Not answering, he gripped her upper arm. His hand felt like a searing vice as he led her through the station. The stench from miserable arrested drunks and drugged-up humanity smacked her hard. The smell of stale donuts and equally stale coffee assaulted her next. Cigarette smoke drifted from the back of the building and mixed with the cheap cologne a lot of the officers had slapped on before work. Keziah’s stomach tumbled nastily.
She ignored her queasiness trying to focus on how to escape Thunder-Force Man, despite her raging carnal appetite for him.

Sylva knew she had tell to Zeke she’d spilled the beans about her psychic tendencies. But when? And how. Should it be now? Her cowboy palmed her face, then stroked. “What is it?” he asked softly. Swallowing, she gathered up her courage. “I made a mistake... a big one.” Her cowboy gazed deeply into her eyes, a slight frown on his face. “What did you do?” Wincing inside, she answered, “I let it slip to your sister and her husband about my... you know... abilities.” His gaze hardened for a moment. “It was an accident,” she continued. “I was worried about you.”

Zeke felt concern flood him, then fill him as if he was the Grand Canyon. His Sylva, his precious wife. “I’m sorry,” she murmured in the silence. “I found myself watching you in my mind. I could tell you were okay... and, well, your sister was as worried and...” Zeke interrupted, “It’s okay, darlin’ Sylva. I’ll handle it.” He thought again, catching a glimpse of Marina’s knowing expression. “We’ll handle it. From the look my sister just gave me, I think your secret is safe.” She nodded softly against his palm. “I think so,” she agreed. “Your sister has been wonderful.”
