Sylva felt as if one weight had been lifted from her. “Is that dinner arriving?” she asked, nodding in the direction of the door. “Should be, darlin’.” She watched him drape the gown over the settee. Taking up both her hands, he grazed kisses over her knuckles. “Be right back,” he continued, grinning affectionately. “Look around, Sylva. Pull out the gowns that catch your eye.” She nodded, noting the sudden fierce glints in his eyes. Wondering at them, she waited until he left the dressing room, and followed. She knew he’d wanted her to remain inside. Why? She peeked out.

Zeke felt his bride’s gaze trained on his back as he slid his pistol out of his hanging holster belt, then moved toward the door. He hadn’t wanted to frighten her. In his world it was always wise for a man to have his gun loaded and ready. There were hombres who would steal her for their own despicable use, or as their bride. And there were the few no-goods who were always on the lookout to steal a man’s property, then leave him dead if they were ornery enough. Since the revolution every man and woman practiced with firearms.
