Galactic 'Supervolcano' Seen Erupting With X-Rays

A galactic "supervolcano" in the massive galaxy M87 is erupting, blasting gas outwards. The cosmic volcano — driven by a giant black hole in M87's center — is preventing hundreds of millions of new stars from forming.

An image, taken by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's Very Large Array, captures the drama in action.

In M87, the plumes of cooler gas being lifted upward contain as much mass as all of the gas contained within 12,000 light-years of the center of the galaxy cluster. The black hole-powered supervolcano is thus very efficient at blasting the galaxy free of the gas that would otherwise cool and form stars.

"This gas could have formed hundreds of millions of stars as massive as our own sun, if the black hole had not removed it from the center of the galaxy," said Evan Million, a graduate student at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., and lead author of a second paper to be published about M87.

Weird! At least, it wasn’t the dream she had the day before... being pregnant by OJ Simpson, who was behind bars... or by her ex-boyfriend... either one would be a horrible fate! Moi hates her dreams, sometimes... yowls, she’d like to rip them into deleted shreds...

Virgo is the sixth sign of the zodiac, to be exact, and it is exacting. Virgo is driven by duty; it is industrious, methodical and efficient. This New Moon is about balance -- the balance between what we want to do and what we need to do -- service to others versus service to self -- spirituality versus practicality. Sylva figured Zeke had heard of the Caretakers by his expression, and the bright glint in his eyes. After a moment, she stepped into the silence. “They said ‘we will care for the dimensional shell. Their work is finished’.” His continued silence started to confuse her. “No, it’s fine, darlin’. You just caught me bein’ thrown from the bull.” Tenderly reaching out, he stroked her cheek with his fingertips, then smiled. “The Caretakers are considered to be our divine friends,” he rumbled gently. “We never speak about them unless it is to thank them or to pass along their messages.”

Zeke figured since the Caretakers had spoken to his Sylva this way, that her presence on his Earth had been more than a lightning-striking act of fate. But then, he already knew that down to his everlovin’ soul. No doubt, she belonged here. With him. His beloved wife. He debated about telling Ben and the others before headin’ into the portal. If he did, that would mean time lost, they couldn’t afford. “Come on, darlin’. That message will have to wait until we return.” Embracing her against his side, he moved them toward the ‘fast tube’ as it was called.
