Worst, we believe the Social Security numbers were not encrypted, a cybersecurity failure that is absolutely indefensible and outrageous.” ...And this is just the first reported “hack attack.” A second breach of the security clearance database – described as “dramatically worse than first acknowledged” – happened with a massive theft of sensitive information provided by intelligence and military personnel to obtain security clearances.
“The forms authorities believed may have been stolen en masse, known as Standard Form 86, require applicants to fill out deeply personal information about mental illnesses, drug and alcohol use, past arrests and bankruptcies,” notes Associated Press. “They also require the listing of contacts and relatives, potentially exposing any foreign relatives of U.S. intelligence employees to coercion.
