Fairy tales are an intrinsic part of our lives: in childhood, we are entertained and educated by the lessons imparted in their stories, and later in life, they continue to inspire and be adapted into popular culture, spawning new books, movies, television and video games.
While some of our oldest fairy tales can be traced to the 6th century storyteller Aesop, there is some contention that he based his stories on older fables. 19th century author Wilhelm Grimm said that he believed that the tales that he and his brother Jacob authored were thousands of years old, but this idea was dismissed by others shortly afterward. However, a new study shows that the origins of fables that have been retold over the centuries may have roots in our deep past.
The joint study was conducted by researchers from New University of Lisbon and Durham University in England. Using a technique more commonly employed by biologists, the researchers created a set of phylogenetic tree diagrams to trace linguistic attributes found within the collected fables back to their origins. This procedure was applied to 275 fables, which in turn were pared down to 76 basic story types.
The results of these phylogenetic trees showed that some of our familiar fables predate both the Bible and ancient Greek myths: Jack and the Beanstalk, for example, was traced back to over 5,000 years ago, and the tale of The Smith and The Devil was traced back to the Bronze Age, from roughly 6,000 years ago."

The FBI negotiated with four armed occupants at a remote federal wildlife refuge in Oregon on Saturday while the holdouts in a video posted online expressed their mistrust of the government and reluctance to leave.
One of the four protesters remaining at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge said in a darkly lit video posted on Friday that he wanted to be assured he would not be arrested if he left. Others with him expressed similar sentiments.
Tensions in the standoff remained high four days after Robert “LaVoy” Finicum, 54, a spokesman for the group that seized buildings at the refuge on Jan. 2, was killed by police during the arrests of occupation leader Ammon Bundy and several other protesters as they traveled on a highway.
Supporters staged a rally in the nearby ranching community of Burns on Saturday night. About 30 pick-up trucks and other vehicles honked horns and waved flags – U.S., Confederate and Gadsden – as they drove. Passing the courthouse, protesters yelled “murderer” and “FBI go home.”

...According to a statement released by the Mountain View Police Department, two officers on motorcycles “observed a black vehicle driving erratically in the southbound lane of N. Shore Boulevard.” Police immediately activated their emergency lights, signaling to the matte black Google car that it should pull over. Police say the driverless car “did not immediately comply,” but upon pulling over, it did so “in a threatening manner.”
Due to an apparent “feed malfunction” on both officers’ body cameras, it’s unclear exactly what transpired once the Google car had safely pulled over on the side of the road but moments later police opened fire on the autonomous vehicle, unleashing a total of eighty-one rounds into it.
Data provided by Google shows both driverless cars were traveling at the exact same speed of twenty-five miles per hour at the time of the incident. Mountain View police have not said why officers chose to pull over the black car rather than the white one. “I’d be surprised if they even noticed the white car to begin with,” said Precious Jackson, a spokeswoman for Black Lives Matter. “This just goes to show that racial profiling is no longer limited to human beings.”
The L.A.-based chapter of Black Lives Matter is hosting a candlelight vigil in honor of the matte black Google Autonomous Vehicle outside of Google’s Mountain View headquarters on Saturday, November 29th at 6 p.m., according to a statement posted on the group’s website."
